Menopause & Thinning Hair: Help is on the Way!

Menopause & Thinning Hair: Help is on the Way!

As women approach the perimenopause years, when their ovaries are shutting down and hormones begin fluctuating, they may begin to experience symptoms of hormone imbalance. Some of these include anxiety, weight gain, hot flashes, insomnia, fatigue, irregular periods, and for many, thinning hair. Much of what a woman may experience during these years depends not only on her genes, but her lifestyle as well. Diet, exercise and stress levels play a major part in this process.

The average age for perimenopause to begin is about 45 years old, but can begin as early as a woman’s 30’s, and may last anywhere from two to up to 15 years. Once a woman has not had a period for twelve consecutive months, she will officially have reached “menopause”, which actually is just one day. It is the 12-month anniversary of when menses have ceased.  The very next day a woman would be considered post-menopausal, and will be for the remainder of her life.

Many women reach out to me on a daily basis regarding how to manage their symptoms. For the purpose of this article, I’d like to specifically address thinning hair.  At the end of this article I’ll share one of my top choices for healthy and effective haircare products that are beneficial for women who are experiencing hair loss with a special discount especially for you!

During the menopause years, hair loss and thinning is almost always related to hormonal changes. Specifically, it can be related to a reduction of estrogen and progesterone.  Since these hormones contribute to helping the hair grow faster, and stay on the head longer, when levels drop, the hair grows more slowly and becomes thinner. While these hormones drop, they can trigger an increase in androgen hormones (a group of male hormones). Androgens can shrink hair follicles, leading to hair loss on the head.

Although thinning hair is usually a result of fluctuating hormones, there may be other factors that contribute to hair loss during menopause, such as stress levels, illness or a lack of nutrients.  Using diagnostic blood tests for thyroid function or auto immune diseases could help rule out other possible causes of hair loss.

So, what can a woman do to help prevent hair loss and keep a healthy head of locks?

  1. Drink your water! We need to be well hydrated for EVERYTHING in our bodies to work properly. Aim to drink ½ your body weight in ounces. So, if you weigh 150 lbs., you’ll want to drink at least 75 ounces of water daily.
  2. Eat a well-balanced diet and eliminate all processed foods and sugars. Include healthy fats such as olive oil. As well, be sure to eat foods high in essential fatty acids such as walnuts, almonds, salmon, flax and chia seeds. Drinking green tea could help too!
  3. Reduce and manage stress levels. Elevated stress and cortisol levels lead to hormone imbalances. Use breathing exercises, meditation, massage and moderate exercise to reduce stress levels.
  4. Move Your Body! Exercise is important for a healthy and balanced body. Exercise helps to reduce symptoms of weight gain, insomnia and anxiety, thus helping to keep hormones balanced.
  5. Go Au-natural. I have to admit this is a hard one for me, as for many women I know. Do the best you can. Limit the use of heating tools. If you dye your hair, try to use all-natural hair color. Use safe and nourishing products and supplements that promote healthy hair growth.

MY TOP PICK FOR PREVENTING HAIR LOSS

One of my top picks for hair care is the 360 Hair Health Plan for Women by Kera Health. This system contains everything you’ll need for your best hair health including shampoo, conditioner, supplements and a free scalp energizer!  I love how the founder; Fay describes her journey to creating this fabulous line. She shares, “The biggest beauty misconception is thinking you can just
slap on some hair tonic or face cream and expect miracles to happen. My time as editor of a leading fashion and beauty magazine taught me the game changers in health and beauty are products that nourish and strengthen from within.”  Yes! I am all about creating beauty from the inside out!

On the KeraHealth website you can read about how hair loss and hair health has been a lifelong struggle for Fay, as well as for many of her readers. Although Fay had tested just about every product on the market, she could not find any effective drug-free supplements that used clinically tested, quality ingredients. So, together with her husband they decided to explore the world of nutraceutical supplementation. Their research took them to the South of France, near Marseille, where they worked relentlessly with a team of scientists. They identified the root of the problem, analyzed the hurdles, and pushed the limits of science until they created the patented technology that enabled them to offer a real solution for poor hair health. This is the same way they identify and create every single one of their
products. In essence, they took “the best that nature and science had to offer to create a powerful nutraceutical for hair”.
